Slid Off Boulder Canyon or Flagstaff Road: Getting Pulled Out

Once snow arrives, three roads send Boulder Towing Company the most recovery calls: CO 119 in Boulder Canyon, Flagstaff Road above Chautauqua, and Magnolia Road off the canyon. All three combine a grade, a curve and a shoulder that falls away. Leave the pavement on any of them and the winch comes before any tow.

Boulder Canyon is 15 miles of CO 119 from the city up to Nederland, 8,235 feet high, on grades up to 10 percent. Flagstaff Road climbs 9 miles of hairpins to Gross Reservoir with slim to no shoulders. Magnolia Road rises 2,190 feet in 4.5 paved miles, averaging 9.1 percent with inside corners at 25 percent, and then turns to dirt.

Upslope snow, heavy and wet, is what sends cars off, and the foothills catch more than town. In the March 2003 blizzard Boulder measured 22.5 inches while the Boulder 7SW station measured 51.0. Cars seldom slide onto level ground. They go nose-first into the uphill bank, or a wheel drops over the downhill edge, often with no shoulder in between.

A driver's reflexes after a slide mostly hurt the recovery. Gas spins the tires. Spinning tires glaze snow into ice. The car settles lower with every spin until its underbody grounds on packed snow, and a light job becomes a heavy one. On the downhill side, a spinning wheel can push the car farther over the edge.

Before we ask where you are, we ask you to do five things: take your foot off the gas, set the parking brake, center the wheel, shut the engine off if snow covers the tailpipe, and switch on the flashers. Do not rock it. On a grade beside a drop, that one try is how a stuck car ends up at the bottom. Leave the car by its uphill doors and stay off the road. Anyone hurt, or the car blocking the travel lane? Ring 911 first. Closing a lane takes a badge.

Footing and direction beat raw power. The tow truck parks on solid pavement upslope of the car, chocks under its tires. After that the cable reaches the car, on a point rated for the load: the manufacturer's tow eye, a hook on the frame, or a soft strap wrapped on a stout frame member. The line never goes on a bumper, a suspension arm or a hitch.

The snatch block, a hooked pulley, solves two problems. When the car sits off the line of the tow truck, we anchor the block to a sturdy tree or a rated point and the cable turns through it, so the car climbs back along its own slide path. When one line is not enough, the block goes on the car and the cable doubles back, and the winch pulls with double force, more slowly. We work in short stages, stopping to look for binding and re-rig. Stay out of the cable's reach the whole time; a loaded line stores energy like a spring, and a failed hook whips back.

Once the car is on pavement, the driver checks steering, wheels and any drips. AWD and electric cars, and any car with a bent wheel, ride home on the deck; the Subaru and Tesla flatbed guide explains why.

The traction law, C.R.S. 42-4-106, runs automatically on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 through May 31. On CO 119, like every other state highway, it applies only when CDOT activates it and posts signs. While active, AWD and 4WD vehicles need winter, all-weather or M+S tires with 3/16 inch of tread or more, or chains or an approved alternative traction device. Violations carry fines and surcharges, and more when they close a lane.

Colorado's Move Over law, C.R.S. 42-4-705, closes the adjacent lane whenever our tow truck sits on the shoulder with yellow lights on. Where drivers cannot change lanes, which on most canyon roads they cannot, they must throttle back to a safe pace, presumed 25 mph or less on roads posted under 45. A 2023 change extended the same protection to any stopped vehicle running its hazards, you included. Violations count as careless driving.

The canyon also closes. On April 27-28, 2021, five boulders as big as trucks fell at the Narrows near mile point 32, shutting CO 119 from mile point 26 to 41 for a day, with CO 72 as the detour. In September 2019 a blast on the flood rebuild had closed it indefinitely. If the road is closed between you and town, tell us; the tow truck takes the long way around.

Most canyon damage comes from rescue attempts, not the slide. A passing driver with a strap and a hitch ball means well, but a ball hitch is built for trailer weight, and a stuck car jerking free can snap the ball and turn it into a projectile. Stay out from below the car. Keep a charged phone in hand; the driver calls on the approach.

Next, the bill. If police want the car cleared, it is a law enforcement-ordered tow and recovery, which the Colorado PUC regulates by the hour under 4 CCR 723-6. When you call us, the job is consensual, no PUC rate applies, and Colorado asks only that every rate and charge be disclosed first. That disclosure is the quote.
