At night, a Boulder tow starts with a mile marker or an interchange

Location first. A divided highway has two sides, and we need to reach yours. On US 36, the Denver-Boulder Turnpike, give your heading, toward Denver or toward Boulder, and the interchange you came through last: Table Mesa, Baseline Road or Foothills Parkway. In town, the street and the closest corner. In Boulder Canyon, the fifteen winding miles of CO 119 between town and Nederland, name the last side road, such as Magnolia Road or Sugarloaf Road.
The short list
- Heading. Highway plus direction and last interchange, or a street with the nearest corner.
- Vehicle. Year, make, model. FWD, AWD, 4WD or electric. Free to roll? Steering locked?
- What broke. No start. Flat. Crash. Drift or ditch.
- Handoff. Your garage, a repair shop, a collision center, a dealer, and who will be there to take the key.
Wheel-lift or flatbed gets decided from what you tell us. So do the total and the pickup window, both settled on this first call. The window is an estimate. Snow on the Turnpike or a canyon closure stretches it. Charge your phone; the driver checks in on the way. Anything beyond light-duty weight we turn down right then, so you are not left waiting.
Boulder tows after dark cost what daytime tows cost
Nothing rolls until you accept a total. Boulder emergency tow pricing, factor by factor has the detail. The five levers:
- Mileage. Our run to you, then yours to the drop. Gunbarrel to 28th Street is one price. Nederland to Broomfield is another.
- Hook or deck. Wheel-lift for a front-drive sedan. Flatbed for an AWD wagon, an EV or anything bent in the crash.
- The scene. A rolling car climbs the deck quickly. A car buried in a drift, or one riding on dollies, eats more time.
- Winch time. A car hauled up from a snowy verge or a drainage ditch adds a separate charge, which you approve before hookup.
- Drop address. A repair shop's after-hours key slot tonight is a single tow. Your driveway tonight and the garage next morning makes two.
Time of day adds nothing. Saturday night, a holiday, 4 a.m.: no surcharge for any of them.
The PUC's towing rules, 4 CCR 723-6, set maximum prices for nonconsensual tows: a private-property impound, or a tow a law enforcement officer orders. You calling us is the opposite case. Your tow is consensual. You owe what you accepted on the phone, nothing more. What the law demands of us is disclosure: every rate and charge, mileage and storage too, before we start.
Boulder Subarus and EVs go on the flatbed, most others on the wheel-lift
Cars get damaged at the hookup far more often than on the road. We run two light-duty rigs. The wheel-lift hoists one axle; the other pair stays on the road, turning. The flatbed, which some call a rollback, drops its deck, draws the car aboard on the winch, and hauls it with no wheel turning.
Drivetrain decides
Front-wheel drive is easy. The wheel-lift raises the front axle, the rear tires roll free, and this smaller tow truck handles tight alleys and low garages. All-wheel drive is different. With the front hung up and the rear turning, the transfer case or center differential takes the strain. Subaru's own guide warns that towing it the wrong way can damage the system, and it points to a flatbed. Tesla's Model 3 manual ranks the flatbed first and warns that tires left to turn in transit can overheat the car. Motorcycles, lowered cars and anything whose wheel got bent go on our flatbed tow truck too.
Straps first, key in hand
On the deck, four tire straps hold the car, each cranked tight. The load goes through the tires, so the body stays untouched. Where tire straps cannot go on, a soft strap takes an anchor point built for the load, or J-hooks bite into purpose-made openings in the frame. We never strap a suspension arm. Before any winching, the car needs neutral, a released brake and a steering wheel that turns. All three take the key. No power and stuck in park? The parking pawl has the drive wheels locked, and dollies go under them.
Empty the car, name the drop
First, clear out what you need tonight: phone, wallet, medicine, the garage opener. After the straps go on, nobody reopens a door. We deliver to the one address you give us, key included. Impounds are nonconsensual, a separate category. It waits in a lot, and storage runs up by the 24-hour day. Car gone overnight? The Boulder Police non-emergency number, 303-441-3333, can say which company towed it.
Traffic on US 36 and the Diagonal passes at highway speed
Flashers on. Car tucked tight to the edge of the shoulder. Climb out on the shoulder side. Wait behind the barrier or up the slope, not beside the car and not behind it. Someone hurt, or the car blocking live traffic? Dial 911 and let them run the scene.
C.R.S. 42-4-705, the Move Over law, asks traffic for an empty lane beside a stopped vehicle with hazards on, or a slower pass when no lane is free. Since 2023 it covers any vehicle on the shoulder, with fines and surcharges. Many drivers ignore it; wait accordingly. Block any part of a lane and police take the scene over; if they clear the road, they choose who tows.
Upslope storms, Chinooks, falling rock
Boulder averages close to 90 inches of snow a season. Most of it arrives in upslope storms between February and April. The March 2021 storm came down at two to three inches an hour; slide off the Diagonal in that and you need a winch before a tow. Chinook winds hit 137 mph at NCAR in January 1982, and a gust like that can rip a door out of your grip. CO 119 climbs Boulder Canyon at grades up to 10 percent, and rock falls there. Five boulders as big as trucks shut the road in April 2021. If the road is blocked behind you, tell us.
Collision calls
Thinking clearly, car out of traffic? You name the drop: body shop, home or dealer. Police clearing the road by order? Then the destination is theirs to set. The PUC caps that tow by the hour, as law-enforcement-ordered tow and recovery. Photograph the damage before the car goes up.
Driveable after all
Lots of late-night calls finish with the owner driving home. A lone click is the battery talking; AAA's numbers show cranking strength down about 35 percent at 32°F and about 60 percent at 0°F. A flat plus an inflated spare means jack, lug wrench, done. Both are roadside jobs we finish at the curb, and both come cheaper than a hookup. A car stuck in snow may be perfectly healthy, and winching it free of the snowbank has it headed home on its own tires. Towing is for the car that cannot go: a wheel that will not turn, a drivetrain that will not drive.

Night calls bunch up at two spots. One is the Table Mesa Park-n-Ride on US 36: commuters step off an evening Flatiron Flyer to a car too cold to crank. The other is the CU campus lots, shared by 38,808 students, where an October battery failure is a regular call. Name the lot; a row number helps.
Had to leave the car overnight on a county road, clear of the travel lane? Say it is buried nose-first in a bank on Magnolia Road. It is not abandoned by sunrise. Boulder County treats a vehicle as abandoned after 72 hours on county public property, and the Sheriff's Office then posts notice and allows 72 more hours before removal. Inside the city, a vehicle abandoned in the right of way is removed once reported, within up to 10 business days. The Sheriff's non-emergency number is 303-441-4444.
Distance sets the price on the longer runs: the Peak to Peak past Nederland, DIA at about 42 miles, Denver at about 30. Eldora, 21 miles up the canyon, counts as a mountain tow, and in a storm the window grows with the road.

Will anyone tow me off the Turnpike on Christmas night?
Yes. Boulder Towing Company works every holiday and every night. Someone answers, a tow truck is assigned, and you learn the arrival window before hanging up. Holidays add nothing to the price.
After dark the driver rings on the approach, so keep a charged phone handy and have the interchange or closest corner ready when you call.
US 36 shoulder, car dead. Safest place to stand?
Past the barrier, well away from the car's tail. Before that, get as far from the travel lane as you can, flashers on, and exit on the shoulder side. Then tell Boulder Towing Company whether you were bound for Denver or Boulder and the interchange you came through last (Table Mesa, Baseline Road or Foothills Parkway). That tells our driver which on-ramp to take.
Body shop after a Boulder crash - my choice or the cop's?
Most of the time, yours. Unhurt, clear-headed and off the travel lanes? Then pick: home, the dealer, or the collision shop you trust. Boulder Towing Company takes the car there. No legal minimum exists if you placed the call yourself. That tow is consensual, and the PUC's maximum rates in 4 CCR 723-6 cover only nonconsensual tows: private-property impounds and tows ordered by law enforcement. Distance, wheel-lift versus flatbed, time at the scene and winch work set the number. The clock does not move it.
Private-lot tow underway in Boulder. Any way to stop it?
If you are fast enough, yes. Colorado's Towing Bill of Rights is on your side here: arrive before the tow truck finishes hooking up, ask for the car, and the carrier must let it go. On residential property there is no drop fee; on commercial property the PUC caps the drop charge. Car already hauled off? Fifteen percent of the fees, up to a statutory cap, plus a signature for the rest, gets it back. A law enforcement tow is up to the officer. Called Boulder Towing Company yourself? Then calling it off is your right, say if the engine fires after all.
