CO 7 or South Boulder Road: the drive from Boulder to Lafayette
About 11 road miles separate the two, and CO 7 is the state highway between them. It leaves Boulder as Arapahoe Road, meets US 287 in Lafayette, shares US 287 south for roughly a mile, then heads east again as Baseline Road toward I-25 exit 229. The other way in is South Boulder Road, which also runs from Boulder to Lafayette.
US 287, Lafayette's primary road, runs north to Longmont and south to Broomfield and Denver. The arrival window is set when you call, since the drive from Boulder Towing Company's home base to Public Road differs from the drive to the Northwest Parkway. Holidays and late nights carry no surcharge.

Arapahoe Road and US 287 rank high for crashes in Lafayette
CDOT's CO 7 corridor study looked at Arapahoe Road from US 287 east to 119th Street, and at 119th Street down to Baseline. From 2015 to 2019 it counted 172 crashes at the signalized intersections: 120 property damage only, 51 with injuries, 1 fatal. Rear-end collisions made up 58 percent. Arapahoe Road at US 287 posted the second-highest crash rate in the study area. The report also lists shoulders on that stretch of Arapahoe Road at typically 3 feet, too narrow for a car.
West of 119th Street, three parallel roads move about 32,700 vehicles a day combined: 12,600 on Baseline Road, 10,500 on Arapahoe Road, 9,600 on South Boulder Road. Lafayette calls come off these roads:
- US 287. The primary road through town; Longmont to the north, Broomfield to the south.
- CO 7. Arapahoe Road on the west side, a mile shared with US 287, then Baseline Road east to I-25 exit 229.
- CO 42. 95th Street, running south from Arapahoe Road in northwest Lafayette toward Louisville, then east on Empire Road to US 287 below downtown.
- Northwest Parkway. Toll road with an interchange at US 287 and Dillon Road, operated by an authority whose members are Lafayette and Broomfield.
- Public Road. The historic downtown street. A parked car there with a drained battery needs only a jump.
A narrow shoulder may leave part of the car in the lane. Flashers on. Blocking traffic, or anyone injured? 911 first. Under C.R.S. 42-4-705, when a tow truck sits stopped with yellow lights going, passing traffic must take another lane or, when it cannot, ease off to a safe pace, presumed on roads posted under 45 to be 25 mph or less. Wait off the road, away from the car, until the tow truck is set up.
Lafayette releases impounds in person and plows side streets late
Lafayette polices itself; Boulder County Communications dispatches its officers on the non-emergency line 303-441-4444. The city lays out how a police impound is released. The registered owner goes in person to the police department with ID and proof of current insurance and receives a release form, and the impound lot will not let the car go without it. An owner with no valid license brings a licensed driver along, and someone collecting a car on the owner's behalf brings a notarized letter and a valid license of their own. Snow crews do primary and secondary routes first. Residential streets get plowed only after more than 10 inches of undrifted snow, and then just down the center, which the city warns can leave windrows across driveways. The March 13-14, 2021 storm measured 21.0 inches a mile south-southwest of Lafayette. After a storm that size, a car plowed in nose-first gets winched out of the Lafayette windrow.
