The Diagonal carries nearly every Boulder-to-Longmont tow
Count on 15 to 16 road miles, give or take, almost all of them on CO 119, the Diagonal Highway. Boulder Towing Company's round-the-clock dispatch sends the tow truck northeast past the Niwot Road intersection. At the Longmont end the expressway turns into Ken Pratt Boulevard and crosses US 287, which runs through the middle of the city as Main Street.
Those miles make a Longmont window longer than a Louisville one, and we state it by phone rather than here. A car up by CO 66 on the north side, or east toward I-25, adds road beyond the end of the Diagonal. Snow and the Hover Street detour add time as well. A 3 a.m. quote is built the same way as a noon one.
Longmont straddles two counties. It covers about 30 square miles in Boulder and Weld, and its east side reaches into western Weld County toward I-25. To us, both halves are one job. The county line only changes which sheriff patrols the county land outside city limits. It does not change the tow truck.
CO 119 into Longmont is a crash corridor and a work zone
CDOT's numbers for the Diagonal between Boulder and Longmont, 2015 to 2019: 929 vehicle crashes, 446 injuries, 3 deaths. About ten miles of it are now under construction, mile points 44.5 to 54.5 from Foothills Parkway to Hover Street, for a commuter bikeway and bus rapid transit. Completion is scheduled for spring 2027. Until then, plan on night lane closures in the work zone, such as the ones CDOT has set for Jay Road.
The Hover Street bridge job
CDOT's regional transportation director names CO 119 at Hover Street as Longmont's busiest intersection. A bridge going in there will lift southwest-bound CO 119 over Hover. All left turns at the intersection have been shut since early September 2026, and the city says they stay shut until the project wraps up in 2027. Heading off the Diagonal for northbound Hover? The other Longmont through roads
- US 287. Main Street, north-south through downtown, crossing CO 119.
- CO 119. Ken Pratt Boulevard south of downtown, then expressway east to a diamond interchange at I-25 exit 240, about 5 miles out, on the Weld County side.
- CO 66. Along the north edge of the city, meeting US 287 there and reaching I-25 at exit 243 near Mead. West end: US 36, just southeast of Lyons.
Still able to move? Roll it to the shoulder, hazard lights blinking, and unload everyone on the shoulder side. C.R.S. 42-4-705, the move-over law, applies to any stopped vehicle with hazard lights going. On a road posted 45 mph or more, a driver unable to change lanes is presumed safe at 20 mph under the limit. Compliance is spotty, so stand well off the pavement. Injuries mean a 911 call first.
Longmont plows residential streets only in severe storms
Upslope snow hits Longmont as well. During the March 13-14, 2021 storm, the National Weather Service recorded 25.5 inches three miles northeast of town. The city maintains 356 centerline miles of road and plows 146 of them in its yearly snow and ice program: arterials, for commuters and emergency access, plus collectors that serve schools and bus routes.
Residential streets sit outside that program. Only a severe storm triggers the Residential Snow Plow Program, and the city warns those passes leave snow rows four to six feet high around cars and driveways. A car beached on packed snow on a side street, or buried nose-first in one of those rows, gets pulled free of Longmont snow first. Whether it needs a tow is decided after.

Longmont Public Safety answers for towed cars inside the city
Longmont's police and fire sit under the city's Public Safety Department. Its Longmont Emergency Communications Center answers non-emergency calls at all hours on 303-651-8501. Longmont car missing overnight? Start there. After any law enforcement tow, the PUC advises asking the ordering agency which carrier it used. The street clock in Longmont runs fast. Municipal code section 11.12.040 lets the city treat a vehicle left 48 hours or more on a public street or public property as abandoned. Staff mark the tires, tag the car and return to tow it if it has not moved. A dead car at a Longmont curb should be gone before that return trip.
Outside the city, the counties take over. On the Boulder County side it is the Boulder County Sheriff, through the non-emergency line 303-441-4444. A front-driver goes on our wheel-lift, the smaller tow truck, which backs into a cramped driveway or under a low garage ceiling. Nothing in the fleet goes past light-duty: pickups, vans, SUVs, cars and motorcycles. A full box truck or an RV is beyond that; we decline those by phone. Will Longmont plow my side street after a big storm?
Only in a severe storm. The regular program plows 146 of the city's 356 centerline miles, and the Residential Snow Plow Program starts only when a storm is severe. A car stuck on an unplowed side street can often be winched free with no tow.
